History

The story of the “Alaska”

The “Alaska” sheepskin jacket reproduced by Mitchell Mfg. was made from 1941 by “Loutre AG” in Sofia, Bulgaria for the German Luftwaffe, to meet the call for winter clothing for the flying units on the Eastern Front. Matching trousers, a “Kanalhose” in grown sheepskin, were made to go with it.

Unlike the usual wartime technique of making every colour and every piece of fur somehow fit, we set great store by quality. Our “Alaska” reproduction is uniformly made from grown white sheepskin, naturally tanned. The characteristic large dark brown collar is made of sheepskin 7 to 10 cm long, just like the original.

The “Alaska” closes with a large size 6 Riri zipper. At each cuff there is a “Zipp” zipper and a leather tab with a press stud to secure it. A storm flap of grey-blue cotton is sewn into the cuff and can be closed with a press stud.

There is a map pocket on the left side of the chest; on the right, a leather tab secures the hose of the oxygen mask with a clip. The “Alaska” also has two slash pockets as hand warmers, lined with fur and closed with a press stud. The waistband is made of grey-blue cotton and also fastens with two press studs; inside, a cotton band with buckles adjusts the waist.

The outside of the fur is naturally tanned, which makes the jacket very prone to dirt. A good waterproofing spray keeps that within limits, and on the other hand it is how the jacket develops its character in the first place.

Whether you want to drive your convertible open in winter or fly a Stieglitz in an open cockpit: with the “Alaska” from Mitchell Mfg. you travel not only in style but unbeatably warm.
