History

The story of the legendary A-2

Well over 700,000 A-2 jackets were made for the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) by more than 20 manufacturers between 1931 and 1943. The makers were mostly outdoor and sportswear companies of the US East Coast - firms such as Rough Wear, Star Sportswear, United Sheeplined and the Cable Raincoat Company secured the coveted government contracts.

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the entry of the USA into the war, that changed overnight: in 1942 alone, around 700,000 A-2 jackets were made. Every pilot and every crew member of the USAAF received an A-2 leather jacket.

As early as 1942 the jacket was stylised into the pilots’ cult object. Not a few decorated their jackets with squadron patches or personalised their A-2 with the names of their loved ones.

The legendary A-2 has lost none of its appeal since its introduction some 90 years ago. Quite the opposite: it is more popular than ever.
